Malaysian Airlines has decided to stop flying to Manado in Indonesia due to low passenger numbers, leading Manado's mayor to say that the closure of the route will hit the area's tourism industry hard.
The airline is expected to stop flying the Kuala Lumpur-Manado route in December 2004. Travel agents have reported that load factors on the route had dropped below 50%.
Manado's mayor said that he had received no official word that the route has been dropped but confessed that, with the majority of tourists that visit the region coming from Malaysia, if it was true the tourism industry would be severely damaged, reports Asia Pulse.
