AirAsia, the low-cost Malaysian carrier, is set to team up with the country's national carrier Malaysia Airlines to open a cost-sharing alliance.

A spokesperson for AirAsia said that the airline hopes that any deal will lead to concrete steps for cooperation and positive results for both airlines by sharing engineering, distribution and marketing channels. The two airlines have previously clashed over several issues including the redevelopment of an old terminal at Kuala Lumpur airport specifically for use by low-cost carriers.

AirAsia has led the market for low-cost airlines in Asia and has now received approval from the Malaysian government and Securities Commission to go public before the end of 2004. The alliance between AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines is the first of its kind between a full service and low-cost carrier, reports Reuters.
