A Northwest Airlines flight from San Francisco to Minneapolis had to turn back 40 minutes into the flight after parts of the Boeing 757's wing were seen to fall off.

Passengers said that the takeoff was unusually loud and then those sitting by the right wing saw metal objects fall from the moveable flaps on the wing. One of the pilots was informed by a flight attendant and he came out assess the situation before deciding to turn the flight around.

A spokesperson for Northwest Airlines said that the aircraft is now out of service while it is being repaired but the cause of the problem has not yet been discovered, reports KTVU.
