Australian airline Qantas has confirmed that cabin crew that are in training at the moment could be used on long-haul flights to prevent disruption from a flight attendants' strike over the Christmas period.

A spokesperson for the airline said that the Flight Attendants Association of Australia (FAAA) has threatened to hold a strike so the airline has taken measures to ensure contingency plans are in place. The FAAA has threatened to call a strike over Qantas' plan to establish a base in London, UK for 400 flight attendants which the airline believes will save it AUD18m a year.

Qantas said that 500 new staff are being trained to cope with the peak holiday period and will be placed on a number of new services. The FAAA has hit back at the plans however, demanding access to any new staff so they can be recruited to the union as per the labour agreement signed by the two sides, reports Dow Jones.
