A Continental Airlines flight from Tokyo, Japan to Houston was forced to make an emergency landing at a small airport in Alaska after suffering engine trouble.

The Boeing 777 aircraft carrying 241 passengers and 16 crew landed at Cold Bay airport early on the morning of 19 October 2004 after the flight crew was forced to shut down one engine. A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said that the pilot decided to land the aircraft to prevent any further problems.

A Continental Airlines spokesperson said that the pilots followed procedure after shutting down the problematic engine which was showing reduced oil pressure. A replacement aircraft was flown to Cold Bay so that the passengers, who were taken to the local community centre, could complete their journey, reported The Associated Press.
