Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific Airways is planning to buy a 9.9% stake in Air China as it tries to establish more services to the Chinese mainland.

The proposed deal between the two airlines is thought to include coordinating scheduling and joint marketing that would help Air China exploit Cathay Pacific's international routes and allow Cathay Pacific access to Air China's lucrative Beijing hub. A spokesperson for Air China said that it believes there are many areas where the two carriers could cooperate for the best of both companies.

Cathay Pacific recently received regulatory approval to add new flights to Beijing, Xiamen and Shanghai in mainland China, reports The Associated Press.
