Singapore's fledgling budget carrier Tiger Airways has confirmed that its CEO Patrick Gan has resigned just five months after he was hired.

No reason has been given for Gan's resignation but it comes as a blow to the airline which is trying to establish itself in a fiercely competitive marketplace against other low-cost carriers such as JetStar Asia, ValuAir and the Malaysian-based AirAsia.

Gan resigned a full two months before commercial flights started in September 2004 but was persuaded to stay until the airline had begun operations, reports Dow Jones.
