Indian airports are on a state of high alert after intelligence sources warned that the radical United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is planning to hijack an aircraft from India or abroad.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) issued a similar warning in September 2004. The latest BCAS warning comes after intelligence sources said that the ULFA was planning to hijack an aircraft with the aim of negotiating for the release of its members who were arrested in a Royal Bhutan Army operation in December 2003 when numerous ULFA camps were destroyed.

According to the intelligence the group has formed an alliance with a Bangladeshi group which has promised to provide hijack-trained operatives. The BCAS said that all security measures must be carried out meticulously and that all measures must now be introduced including secondary security checks at ladder points, reports Express India.
