Midwest Airlines has announced that it will be outsourcing its heavy maintenance operations for its MD-80 aircraft from the start of 2005.

The airline's senior vice president of operations David C. Reeve said that the main reason for the move was to make sure that the airline was operating at its maximum efficiency.

Reeve added that the airline's conversion from MD-80 and DC-9 aircraft to Boeing 717 aircraft left it with only 13 MD-80s in its fleet and that an in-house heavy maintenance facility was not needed any longer. Four US-based heavy maintenance firms are being considered for the contract with a decision is expected within the next few weeks.
