Indonesia's national carrier Garuda has asked the government for permission to offer more services to the Middle East due to an increase in demand.

The airline's president Indra Setiawan said that it had asked the ministry of transportation to hold talks with the government over increasing the airline's current quota of eight flights a week. Indra said that the demand for flights to the Middle East had risen because of the improved security situation in the region.

Indra said he hoped that approval would be given before the end of 2004 so that Garuda could add new flights at the start of 2005. He added that if the request was approved he expected the additional quota to be given to private airlines as well, reports Antara.
