US Airways told to move aircraft maintenance work back to Pittsburgh

Airline Industry Information, Oct 4, 2004

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

An arbitration panel ruled on Friday (1 October) that US Airways violated a contract with its mechanics by transferring aircraft maintenance work out of Pittsburgh.

The airline last year moved the maintenance of 10 of its Airbus jets to Singapore Technologies Mobile Aerospace Engineering Inc of Mobile, Alabama.

The company claimed that it needed to transfer the work because it lacked the buildings and equipment needed to overhaul the aircraft and service the rest of its fleet in Pittsburgh.

However the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers successfully argued that the shift would violate workers' contracts.

US Airways has been ordered to return the work to Pittsburgh.
