The Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has officially ruled out the sale of national carrier Aer Lingus, saying that it would not solve the airline's problems.

Ahern said that the whole airline industry was suffering from problems and cited Alitalia as an example of a national carrier in deep trouble, but added that the Irish government would not be permitted to bail out Aer Lingus like the Italian government did for Alitalia.

Speaking after media speculation about the airline's future Ahern said that Aer Lingus had proposed voluntary redundancies and that the management team was turning things around, reports RTE Interactive.
