The Singapore Airlines-Malaysia Airlines duopoly over the lucrative Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route may be about to be brought to an end following comments from the Singaporean and Malaysian prime ministers.

In meetings between the Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Malaysian premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi about boosting tourism between the two countries aviation was cited as one of the areas that needed more cooperation.

Currently Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines are the only two carriers permitted to operate on the route and they have a fixed price fare of SGD304 for a roundtrip ticket. It is cheaper to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok - which is almost double the distance - than it is to fly to Singapore, reports Dow Jones.
