Waioty Airport in the town of Maumere, Indonesia, has been closed due to volcanic ash from the eruption of the volcano Mount Egon.

Officials in the Sikka regency where the airport is located made the decision after all the facilities and essential equipment at the airport were covered in 1cm of volcanic ash.

Flights from Denpasar in Bali and the East Nusa Tenggara capital of Kupang to Maumere have been suspended. An airport spokesperson said that the move was necessary due to the health and safety implications and the increased activity of the volcano over the past seven days, reported the Jakarta Post.
