American Airlines has abandoned its USD5-10 fare increase after competitors failed to follow suit.

The airline said that it had raised fares to combat rising fuel prices and that it thought the increase was warranted. The charge will not be rescinded in some small markets.

It is the ninth time in 2004 that a US airline has tried to push through a price rise to cover higher fuel and operating costs. Some industry analysts claim that one is needed to keep airlines from getting into financial difficulties, reports The Associated Press.
