An official news blackout on the collapse of a wall at an airport in Dubai on 28 September 2004 reportedly sparked rumours of an al-Qaeda attack.

The Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and the contractor working on the airport ordered the news blackout after the incident which left five people dead and 12 injured, leading to rumours of a terrorist attack that had killed 70 and left hundreds trapped under tonnes of concrete.

An official statement on the incident was not released until four hours after the collapse and even then only confirmed the number of dead and injured. Journalists were barred from the site which is part of a massive expansion of the airport and were promised a news conference that never occurred, reports Reuters.
