Russia to stop navigation services to some CIS countries

The Russian government has drawn up plans to stop several Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) airlines from flying into Russian airspace.

Airlines from Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine will be affected after they allegedly failed to pay outstanding ground navigation fees by 3 September 2004. The ban will come into force despite the fact that many of the airlines that owe money have gone bankrupt.

The Russian Transport Ministry said it believed that the airlines' countries of origin are now responsible for the debt and that it would stop providing aero-navigation services on 1 October 2004 if the debt was not repaid, reports Mosnews.com.
