The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association, representing ATA Airlines' mechanics, has asked the National Mediation Board to release it from mediation.

The union has been involved in a contract dispute with ATA Airlines for nearly two years and the two sides have been in mediation for several months. The move to pull out of mediation could signal strikes by the mechanics after a 30-day cooling off period.

Union representatives said that the union just wants a commitment to job security from the airline, which is looking to cut costs and ease its tight financial situation. A spokesperson for the airline said that it cannot afford to commit to any cost increases that would harm its flexibility, reports CNN.
