The government of Ghana has reached a partnership deal with Ghana International Airline (GIA) to help the troubled state carrier Ghana Airways.
A new airline will replace Ghana Airways, funded by the government and GIA, which will raise around USD55m in equity, debt and equipment for the new carrier. A task force has been appointed to wind down Ghana Airways which was recently banned from flying in the US after breaching aircraft safety regulations.
The transition into the new airline is expected to be completed by the end of 2004 with commercial operation beginning in the first quarter of 2005. A new modern aircraft fleet will be acquired to fly to Europe, the US and across Africa, reports the Angola Press.
