The British and Indian governments agreed on Wednesday (13 April) to more than double the number of flights between the two countries.

Under a deal to ease travel restrictions between London and major Indian cities, which follows talks in New Delhi, the number of weekly flights is to increase to at least 84 from the current 40.

The number of weekly flights between London and New Delhi or Bombay would increase to 56 by the end of 2006 and in addition there would be 14 flights per week between London and Bangalore and 14 a week between London and Chennai, said government officials.

The decision has been welcomed by airlines, as it opens up sources of revenue on routes where demand often exceeds existing services, reported Reuters.
