Continental Airlines applies for permission to operate direct flights to Shanghai

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) has formally submitted an application to the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for approval to operate direct flights from New York/Newark Liberty International Airport to Shanghai, China.

The airline said that if the application is approved it will launch flights in March 2007, using Boeing 777 aircraft. Continental said that it would also offer connecting service between Shanghai and destinations in the US, Europe and Latin America.
