Airlines from other countries are to be allowed to operate an unrestricted number of international flights in the west of China in a bid to help develop the region.

According to a report in the China Daily newspaper Yang Guoqing, vice director of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, stated that there will be no more limits placed on applications by overseas carriers for operating international flights in western areas of the country.

It is thought that restrictions are to be lifted across six provinces and autonomous regions in western China that are now home to 32 airports, reported The Associated Press.

A separate report by the Xinhua News Agency said that the six regions are due to add another 16 airports by the end of the decade and have a total of 60 airports by 2020.
