A system used to process international arrivals by US customs officials was inoperable for more than five hours on Thursday (18 August) at airports around the US, causing delays and lengthy queues of passengers.

Approximately 2,000 travellers were reportedly left waiting to pass through immigration on Thursday evening at Miami International Airport, with customs officials in New York being forced to process international travellers by hand, causing further delays.

The computer problem originated in database systems located in Virginia and lasted from around 1800 EDT until approximately 2330 EDT, reported The Associated Press.

According to a spokesman for US Customs and Border Protection the cause of the problem is not yet known, although it is thought unlikely that the shutdown is linked to terrorism.
