One runway has now been reopened at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport in Guam after a Northwest Airlines aircraft experienced a failure in its front landing gear on Friday (19 August), forcing the airport to close.

Despite the airport reopening on Friday evening, flights from both Japan and South Korea were cancelled on Saturday (20 August) as only one of the airport's two runways was operational.

The Northwest aircraft blocked the airport's second runway as an emergency team assessed the damage. The aircraft was expected to be removed on Saturday afternoon with no further cancellations being necessary, said The Associated Press.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the US National Transportation Safety Board.
