A woman has been arrested by US police for trying to open an exit door on an aircraft while it was in the air.

The woman, reportedly from Dania Beach, Florida, apparently got up from her seat and tried to open the door while the aircraft, operated by United Airlines, was approaching Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. According to police the aircraft was at an altitude of about 4,000 feet at the time of the incident and, although she failed to open the door, the handle was turned far enough for a warning light to come on in the cockpit. The woman was convinced to sit down but was not physically restrained, The Associated Press reported.

She was arrested for investigation of malicious mischief and the police are reportedly also examining whether alcohol and prescription medication played a part in the incident.
