An aircraft travelling from Birmingham, England to Edinburgh, Scotland with 56 passengers on board was forced to make an emergency landing at Leeds Bradford International Airport on Thursday (4 August) after smoke was seen being emitted from one of its engines.

According to a spokesperson from the airline Flybe, the decision was taken to divert the aircraft to Leeds as a precaution after a smoke detector was set off on board the flight. The aircraft made a safe landing at Leeds Bradford airport and no injuries were reported as a result of the problem, although according to the BBC an elderly passenger has since suffered from a 'stress-related incident'.

An investigation is now under way and the aircraft has been withdrawn from service for examination purposes. All passengers on the flight were later flown to their destination of Edinburgh on an alternative aircraft.
