Airline Industry Information, August 5, 2005

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2005 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

The US Department of Transportation's Air Travel Consumer Report shows that the on-time performance of the largest airlines improved in June year-on-year while the percentage of on-time flights was lower than in May this year.

The 20 airlines that report on-time performance apparently recorded an overall on-time arrival rate of 75.2% for June, which is an improvement over June 2004 (73.0%) but not as good as that of May (83.7%). The figures are part of information filed with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), which is a part of the DOT's Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

In addition to the above mentioned figures, the monthly report also includes data on flight cancellations and causes of flight delays, as well as information on reports of mishandled baggage filed with the carriers, airline bumping, and consumer service, disability and discrimination complaints received by the DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division.

The report showed that in June the airlines cancelled 1.6% of their scheduled domestic flights, up from June 2004 (1.5%) and May 2005 (0.9%).

The highest on-time arrival rates were reported by Hawaiian Airlines (94.1%), followed by SkyWest Airlines (83.1%) and Comair (81.2%). The lowest, on the other hand, were reported by Alaska Airlines (49.8%), AirTran Airways (66.4%) and Atlantic Southeast Airlines (68.8%).

The five most delayed flights were Alaska Airlines' flight 164 from Anchorage, AK to Seattle, which was late 100% of the time, Alaska Airlines flight 119 from Ontario, CA to Seattle (late 96.15% of the time), US Airways flight 182 from Charlotte, NC to Newark, NJ (late 95.65% of the time), ExpressJet Airlines flight 1212 from Washington Dulles to Newark, NJ (late 95.45% of the time) and ExpressJet Airlines flight 2323 from Norfolk/Virginia Beach/Williamsburg, VA to Newark, NJ (late 95.45% of the time).
