The trial of a pilot who worked for Indonesian national carrier Garuda Indonesia started on Tuesday (9 August).

The 44-year-old pilot is accused of murdering human rights activist Munir Thalib by putting arsenic in his drink during a flight to Amsterdam, the Netherlands last year.

Munir died about two hours before the aircraft landed at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport and the Garuda pilot, who was supervising security on the first leg of the flight, is the sole suspect in the case despite claims that intelligence agency officials may have been involved.

The pilot has pleaded not guilty and will be given a chance to respond to the charge when proceedings resume on 16 August. If convicted he faces the death sentence.
