Northwest suffered baggage problems over the weekend

The baggage handling system of Northwest Airlines suffered problems over the weekend (12-13 February), leaving thousands of pieces of baggage behind.

Airline officials, while acknowledging the problem, said that the glitches were caused by a backup at the Transportation Security Administration machines. Kurt Ebenhoch, Northwest's spokesman, told the Detroit Free Press that it was an unusual event that was caused by an unusual combination of circumstances.
