Aircraft headed for New Zealand's capital Wellington were cancelled or diverted today (2 February) because of heavy fog.

Due to the weather conditions more than 90 flights were cancelled as the fog, which appeared on Tuesday evening (1 February), still remained today, almost 24 hours later. According to estimates nearly 7,000 travellers were affected by the problem, The Associated Press reported. International arriving flights were diverted to Auckland and Christchurch.

A representative for Air New Zealand reported 70 cancelled flights, affecting some 5,000 travellers, while Qantas Airways had cancelled more than 20 flights that affected 2,000 travellers.
