A US judge has ruled that Northwest Airlines may refuse to allow flight attendants to observe bargaining sessions over new contract terms.

The Professional Flight Attendants Association had gone to court because the airline did not want rank-and-file flight attendants to observe the contract negotiations. Northwest Airlines said it believed that allowing observers could prolong the negotiations.

The airline is holding talks with its unions as part of efforts to reduce its annual labour costs by some USD950m.
