The leaders of Britain, France and Germany have been in contact with the Polish government to recommend the purchase of aircraft from French company Airbus rather than its US rival Boeing Co, the Polish government said on Tuesday (22 February).

Polish national carrier LOT currently has an all-Boeing fleet of large aircraft, plus 16 smaller Embraer jets and 13 propeller-driven Aerospatiale-Alenias. According to a report by the Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper, the carrier plans to buy five to eight aircraft for a total of about USD500m.

LOT was due to choose new aircraft by the end of 2004 but delayed the decision as part of a cost-cutting programme which has returned the airline to profit.

Despite the lobbying the choice will be made for commercial, not political reasons, said both the Polish government and LOT.
