Lufthansa had to cancel a number of flights on Wednesday (23 February) because of US President George W. Bush's visit to Germany, which restricted use of Frankfurt international airport and the surrounding airspace.

Lufthansa and its partners, including its regional airlines, cancelled 77 European flights, which affected about 5,000 passengers. In addition 178 flights were delayed by about an hour on average, an airline spokesperson said.

The carrier said that it was examining whether it would seek damages from German state-owned air traffic controller Deutsche Flugsicherung (DFS) following the disruption, reported Reuters.
