Foreign airlines that fly to Kazakhstan's former capital of Almaty are to be obliged to change destination to the new capital, Astana, according to a Transport and Communications Ministry official quoted by Reuters.

Flights between Astana and Almaty are currently operated by Air Astana, a Kazakh state-owned airline which has a monopoly on the route.

Foreign airlines that serve Almaty at present include Air France-KLM, German airline Lufthansa, British Airways, Turkish Airlines and Transaero of Russia.
