The European Commission has said that it is drafting new rules to clarify what aid can be given to regional airports and airlines across Europe.

The aim of new rules, which are to be drafted after a consultation with airlines, regional governments and airports, would be to offer more support to regional airports with guidelines on investment at the infrastructure level and on startup aid.

The guidelines will be designed to ensure equality of treatment between companies and between airports, said the EU commissioner in charge of transport policy.
