Taiwan has agreed to discuss a proposal from China for direct charter flights between China and Taiwan during the Lunar New Year starting in early February.

The flights would be the first direct flights between the two since 1949, when Taiwan banned direct flights after Nationalists fled China after being defeated in the civil war. The Mainland Affairs Council of the Taiwanese government said today (13 January) that it will send an airline representative and the civil aeronautics chief to Macau to talk with the Chinese representatives, The Associated Press reported.

Since 1949 flights between China and Taiwan have been operated via a third destination, mostly Hong Kong or Macau.
