A British Airways Boeing 747 carrying 239 passengers to New York was forced to return to London on Wednesday (12 January) on the orders of US officials.

Authorities in the US determined that one of the passengers represented a terror threat, the airline said.

Flight BA175 had been flying for three hours when it was forced to turn back to London's Heathrow Airport, where the suspect passenger, travelling on a French passport, was detained by police.

The man was a positive match with an anti-terrorism watchlist, said a US Transportation Security Administration spokesperson.

The passenger was released without charge after questioning by the London police, reported The Associated Press.
