Italian air traffic controllers may face between six and 19 months in jail after being spotted shopping or playing football instead of working.

Italian prosecutor Fabio Roia has reportedly asked the judge in the case to sentence the 36 air traffic controllers to jail. It was found that only about half of the 40 air traffic controllers due to be working at Milan's Linate airport were actually present at work when an investigation was being carried out, according to prosecutor Fabio Roia.

According to Reuters, the investigation was launched after an incident in 2000. At that time, the absence of air traffic controllers at the airport during a blackout at a Rome airport left Linate too short of staff and the airport was unable to cope with the extra work of monitoring additional Italian airspace. Police reportedly managed to film some of the missing controllers shopping or playing football in working hours and these have been charged with defrauding the state.

The judge is expected to make a ruling in February.
