Mechanics at Northwest Airlines sued the company on Thursday (13 January) in a dispute over the presence of observers during contract talks.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association claims that the Railway Labor Act gives it the right to have a limited number of its members watch the negotiations, while Northwest objects, claiming that the observers hamper the talks, and has asked for federal mediation. The two sides last met on Wednesday (12 January), when Northwest abandoned the talks over the issue.
