Guatemala's government dismissed striking air traffic controllers last week and brought in replacements from Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico.

The controllers walked out of the air traffic control tower at Guatemala's main international airport on Tuesday (11 January) after several weeks of working without a contract. The strike forced 25 flights to land at other airports on Wednesday (12 January), while another 25 flights were grounded in Guatemala City.

The Guatemalan Civil Aeronautics Director said that the use of controllers from other countries was a temporary measure while more local controllers are being recruited, reported The Associated Press.
