Air Canada has announced plans to lay off 180 maintenance employees as part of its cost-cutting programme.

The airline, which emerged from bankruptcy protection in September 2004, has already shed about 10,000 jobs since the start of its bankruptcy in the first half of 2003. However it is continuing its restructuring, according to a spokesperson for the company.

Air Canada currently has some 3,800 maintenance workers and the layoffs amount to about 4.7% of these. Most of the layoffs will be in Vancouver, while some will come in Winnipeg and Montreal, reports Reuters.
