Singapore is close to making an open skies agreement with Australia, according to Singapore's transport minister Yeo Cheow Tong.

Under the terms of such an agreement, Singapore Airlines would be able to operate Australia-US routes, including Los Angeles-Australia, which is described as one of the strongest performing routes in the world.

Qantas has reportedly tried to get the Australian government to block a full agreement, saying that the airline could be hurt by the competition just after recovering from the weak market caused by SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2003. Australian and Singapore representatives are to discuss the matter in mid-February, according to Reuters.
