Switzerland's Geneva airport was closed for eight hours yesterday (23 January) due to snow.

The closure reportedly caused dozens of flight cancellations, including the trip of the Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey to Ukraine for the inauguration of president Viktor Yushchenko. Despite the use of snow clearing equipment the runways were too slippery to use, airport spokesman Philippe Roy said. During the day the airport received more than 10cm of wind-driven snow, and it was the longest the airport has been closed in 20 years, The Associated Press reported.

The weather caused the cancellation of almost 80 landings and 57 take-offs while 28 flights were diverted to other airports. Some of the affected travellers were able to take a train to catch other aircraft at Zurich airport, which was reportedly largely unaffected.
