Heavy fighting outside Iraq's Baghdad International Airport prevented two Jordanian passenger aircraft from landing on Monday (24 January).
The airport's control tower denied the two Royal Jordanian aircraft landing permission as there was firefighting nearby. Both flights turned around and landed safely back in Amman.
The second flight carried Iraqi defence minister Hazem Shaalan, who was trying to get back to Iraq after talks in Jordan, the minister told reporters in Amman, and among the passengers waiting for the second flight back to Jordan were eight Chinese construction workers who were freed by their Iraqi kidnappers at the weekend, reported The Associated Press.
