American Airlines has announced that it will start selling snack boxes at USD3 and a sandwich or wrap at USD5 in the main cabin on selected domestic routes longer than three hours, and on transcontinental and Hawaii flights, from 1 February 2005.

According to the airline the new programme is part of its Turnaround Plan, with the motto "Fly Smart: Give Customers What They Value". The plan is reportedly a direct result of collaboration among employees and feedback from customers and flight attendants.

The aim is to provide food options on non-transcontinental flights and this means that food will be available on approximately 300 more flights. The airline said that the new programme will be offered instead of the existing main cabin food service on about 120 transcontinental flights and 40 services to Hawaii.

It has been estimated that the move will save American Airlines about USD30m annually.
