A contract for an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony system has been awarded to France Telecom Group (NYSE:FTE), the telecommunications carrier has revealed.

European aircraft maker Airbus has reportedly selected France Telecom, its subsidiary Equant and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO), an Internet networking company, for the five-year contract. The IP-based telephony system is to be provided for 30,000 extensions at two Toulouse Airbus sites in France and 10,000 at the Filton and Broughton Airbus sites in the UK. Cisco is to provide the sites with 40,000 IP telephone handsets and CallManager software and France Telecom and Equant will provide integration services in France and the UK respectively.

According to Airbus, its new IP telephony system will enable it to meet the demands of its business including cost reduction targets, and ensure secure, reliable communications. From the start of the contract France Telecom and Equant are to assume responsibility for the existing telephone system and implementation of the new system will commence following a due diligence process.

No financial terms were revealed.
