An advertisement for Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, which appeared in London newspapers on Friday (15 July) and which refers to the London bombings of 7 July, has received over 100 complaints.
The advert features Winston Churchill saying: "We shall fly them to the beaches, we shall fly them to the hills, we shall fly them to London!", which is a play on words from a morale-boosting speech by Churchill during World War Two.
Consumers have complained that the advert is crass and offensive, or insensitive, coming so short after the attacks, said a spokesperson for the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
People should be encouraged to live their lives as normal and not to be defeated by terror, said a spokesperson for Ryanair in defence of the advert, adding that the carrier is trying to stimulate the tourism market to ensure that London keeps flying.
