The chief executive of the Air Transport Association, an industry body that represents airlines in the US, has said that anti-missile technology for US commercial aircraft is not worth the investment.

James May said that all the reports he has seen on the technology indicate that it is not completely effective against the missiles it is designed to defeat, and is not capable of defeating other types of missiles.

May said in a letter to White House homeland security adviser Frances Townsend last week that the bill for the anti-missile systems could reach USD100bn, and looking at the relative threat involved this investment is not justified.

Homeland security officials are currently examining the feasibility of deploying anti-missile technology on commercial aircraft and will report their findings to Congress in early 2006.
