The White House is said to be closely monitoring the ongoing dispute between Northwest Airlines and its mechanics.
On Wednesday (20 July) mediators declared an impasse in the negotiations between the two sides, starting a 30-day long cooling-off period that will end on 20 August. Under federal labour law, after that period the mechanics can strike or Northwest can impose new wage rules.
US President George W. Bush can intervene in the dispute and temporarily block strike action if his advisers conclude that a work stoppage would harm the economy, reports Reuters.
