United Airlines (OTC Bulletin Board: UALAQ) has issued a statement in response to the action by the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) today (28 June).

In the statement the airline said that the actions the AFA leadership has threatened are illegal and will not be tolerated and that the airline will do whatever is necessary to ensure the continued smooth operation of the company.

United also pointed out that every other union represented at the company has recognised the need to terminate and replace pension plans in order for the airline to successfully complete its restructuring.

Flight attendants employed by United Airlines protested at airports in Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Frankfurt and at 14 locations in the US today over the airline's decision to terminate its pension plan. The flight attendants reportedly threatened to carry out a "chaos strike", which is a random and unannounced walk-out. Jack Kande of the Association of Flight Attendants said that the protest was a way to announce to the public that a random strike could be carried out any time without warning.

The protest was against the decision to turn over the pension plan to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp, a move approved by a bankruptcy judge in May this year, The Associated Press reported.
